Friday Fotos

My phone likes to shut down when I try to put up a blog post with pictures, but it's the quickest way to get pictures on here! So I apologize for the posts being fewer recently. But this week we:

I took Levi out on Monday morning for his last gymnastics class, then a lunch date at Noodles and Co. for his favorite, spaghetti, and then a dental check-up. He loved the one-on-one time!
Zeke is learning new notes and new songs and working hard on his piano skills. I'm so proud of the way he has improved over the past year. We've been taking things nice and slow and it is paying off! He is reading music and enjoys his *almost* daily practice time.
I captured this quick shot of Daddy-Daughter. Sometimes when I can't get her to sleep for me, she'll do it for Jeremiah. She never clings to me like a little monkey, but she does with her Daddy!
Have a great weekend everyone!

18 Months Old

Zoë Kayte, you are 18 months old today! You are such a full-of-life girl! You have plenty of personality to turn on or off the charm at the drop of a hat. Here's what you've been up to:

- You have 7 teeth! Teething is not fun.
Looking a bit disappointed that you couldn't join the boys in painting.
You got bored waiting for the boys, so you found my shoes and Daddy's hat
You like dressing up and accessorizing

Enjoying a donut on Zeke's birthday
Staying warm with Mimi just inside the door on Zeke's birthday
Birthday cake with Pop-Pop
Saying later before Mimi headed home to NE
- You are starting to let me put barrettes in your hair, for at least a few minutes at a time!

- You say lots of words! And I can figure most of them out when used in context. Let's see how many I can remember: "dah" for dog, please, Zeke, Dada, Mama, more, hello, Pop-Pop, cat, crackers, outside, sock, shoes, "duh" for duck, cheese (for taking pictures, since you can't eat any ;)) Also, you try to say most anything I ask you to; we have a book about the farm and you'll repeat after me -- "cow" "moo", "horse, neigh" - "shee" (for sheep) "baa" - "pi" (pig) and then you make a snorting sound, plus all the noises from the 'noisy animal' page. At suppertime we each say something we're thankful for that day and you have begun to participate. You wait for your turn and then smile and point and say "Zeke", "Dada". You are also holding Levi and my's hand while we pray at meals.

- When we are putting the boys to bed, you like to climb under the covers and read with them and pretend to sleep. But you are too wiggly to lay still for long!

- You are constantly on the move. Holding you has become more difficult because you like to go wherever the wind blows. You're starting to run and do your best to keep up with the boys. You sometimes hit the boys when you aren't getting your way. And your scream is ear-piercing! My goodness. Being inside when you scream is nearly intolerable!
You're getting so brave on the playground!
- You typically sleep from 9 pm - 7 am and nap from 12 - 2 pm.

- You are wearing mostly 18 month clothes although a few 12 month outfits still fit.
Walking around like a big girl!
- You eat most everything we give you! I love not having picky eaters! We try to avoid dairy and chocolate because those seem to upset your stomach. I hope that you grow out of one or both of those before long -- for your benefit... and mine! ;)

- I have begun to find you on the couch or floor reading books. You can play by yourself for a few minutes at a time, which I think is wonderful considering you have 2 older brothers! Sometimes when they are sleeping or otherwise entertained, you will play alone and/or look at books before going to find somebody.

Levi loves you very much!
- You like to shut all the doors on us. If I'm in the bathroom brushing my teeth, I will randomly hear a click behind me as you've pulled the door shut on me. Then you knock or scream until I open it back up. You like to walk down our little hall and shut all the doors one by one. You are always so pleased with yourself.

Zoë, you are such a fun girl! You are such a welcome and delightful addition to our family! I love your playful spirit as well as your willingness to help when I ask you to do little tasks. I enjoy getting you dressed and putting you in pink more than I expected :) You like to be a part of everything that is going on in the household and share plenty of smiles and laughs. You seem to enjoy animals, especially dogs and our cat Dora. You enjoy being outside and taking walks in the wagon and stroller. I look forward to all you'll learn and how you'll develop over the next 3 months! Love, Mommy

He's FIVE!

Happy Birthday Ezekiel Dekker! You are five years old today. You have grown in to a little boy! The baby and toddler years are officially over and it's a little sad and a lot awesome! Yes, those young years are precious and delightful, but I like every stage and age with you! I'm sharing a few pictures from the first days of your life and some from this past year as you have developed into the wonderful boy you are now. Here's what you've been up to, things you enjoy, and all that makes you, YOU!
24 hours old

You made me a Momma!

Our first family of '3' photo

Aunt Teresa, Aunt Heather, and Mimi came down to see you just hours after you were born.

Sweet sleeping boy

I love bath time photos!
- We are homeschooling you during these preschool years. Every day we go over the day of the week, month, date, and weather. You have memorized two Bible verses and I'm going to have a new one for you every month this year. You recognize most of your letters and have learned to write all of them in uppercase. Your "Home Life" tasks include putting away the silverware from the dishwasher every day and clearing the table after meals. We have begun simple math -- addition and subtraction (Mondays). We complete a science project every Tuesday from your new engineering book which you are greatly enjoying. On Wednesdays we study a new animal, watch videos, and play games online at the National Geographic website. On Thursdays we read from your chapter book. On Fridays we work on your Kumon books which, currently, include Uppercase Letters and Logic.

- You have been playing the piano for nearly a year! As you were just 4 when we began, I learned to take a step back and not push so hard. So we haven't had a lesson every week, and some lessons include just passing one song and learning one new one. But doing this more laid back approach has seemed to work for us. You are still interested in playing the piano, you enjoy practicing most days and there hasn't been crying from either of us in several months! You have begun to learn about the staff and reading music. Your first piano recital was in December and I was so proud of you! You played "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" (your favorite) and "Good King Wenceslas".

- You typically sleep from 9 pm - 7:30/8 am. Some days you sleep in longer which I love because it's what I enjoy doing as well! You nap just once or twice a week. Otherwise after lunch you watch a show and have some rest time and then we are able to do a few uninterrupted school activities during the week, especially your science projects.
- You still love strings, electrical cords, lights (oh so many lights!), scarves. Your obsession remains after 5 years. I don't get it, but am very interested to see how this will play out in your future. Just this morning you pulled a string off of Levi's underwear, I asked you to throw it away, and you said you were having fun playing with it. Umm... ok. You are unique and easily entertained and it's wonderful!

- You continue to be a terrific eater. Rarely picky. You love fruits and vegetables. And pizza. And chicken. And whipped cream. And the list goes on. I am often impressed by the amount of food you eat. Yet you also are good at self-regulating. Yesterday Daddy asked you if you wanted some of his pretzel in the afternoon and you said no, you were still full from lunch.

- Last year you played instructional soccer in the spring, took summer swim lessons, and then did another block of soccer in the fall which included actual games. When I asked you what you wanted to play last fall, I read through some descriptions from the Chilson Center. Then you happened to see a picture of a child playing golf. And that's what you decided you wanted to play. As they do not start until 5 years old, we went ahead and put you in soccer. But you have not forgotten your great aspiration to play golf upon turning five. You are currently doing a month-long Mommy and Me dance class which has been fun. But you recently reminded me that your desire for golf remains, especially since you'll be 5 soon. :D

-
- You are quite sweet with your little brother and sister. You are fairly patient with them and can be such a big helper! Recently, Zoë was pouring water over your head during bath time. You just looked at me and smiled and said that you didn't mind that she was doing it. I'm constantly thankful for your sweet, calm, and gentle spirit. Some times it does bother you and you'll let me or Daddy know, but for the most part you are hard to rile. Levi does know how to push your buttons, but even so, many times you try to talk it out with him before resorting to physical violence :) You aren't always a fan of changing your position or whatever idea you have in your head, so sometimes it can be difficult when your brother or sister come and start messing with you when you are trying to enact a plan.

- Whenever we are out walking, if we cross paths with people, inevitably you will give them a compliment (LOVE IT!). It can be anything -- "I like your shirt!", "I like your dog!", "I like your gutters!", "I like your lights!" just to name a few. I am very fond of this thoughtful and considerate attitude you have toward others.
Dancing with Daddy
- You love to be outside! During the summer you were out for hours each day. Even now, in winter, we still spend as much time out there as we can. We have had some very cold, snowy days, and I bundle you up and send you out first and you are the last to come in as well. The cold or hot doesn't seem to bother you much. You complain so little -- that's such a great trait to have, I think!

Before we wrap up, let's do a little birthday interview!
Birthday Interview: 1/26/17
What is your favorite food? Strawberries. Meat! And popcorn. Bananas. Mayonnaise.
What is your favorite movie? "The one that I'm going to the theater." (We're going to see "Moana" on Sunday.)
Favorite Drink: Orange Juice and Apple Juice
Favorite Color: Red.
Favorite Song: "The Wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round."
Things to do: "Do my school. And do my calendar."
Favorite Outfit: "Stripes shirts."
Favorite Outing: Play.
What do you like about Levi? "Hugging him and kissing him."
Zoë? "When she plays with me."
Mommy? "When you take a bath with me."
Daddy? "When I play rough with him."
Summer or Winter? Summer
Anything else? "Uh, going to get a new house!"

Ezekiel Dekker, I am proud to be your Momma! You have such a great attitude toward life and it will serve you well to be able to roll with the punches and deal with what comes your way. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for me to patiently wait, but you usually end up doing what we ask of you, you just need time to think about it. You can be very funny at times and have an extensive vocabulary which makes you more interesting to listen to! I enjoy taking you on short errands with me around town and you seem to enjoy coming along as well. I like our special dates when we go to Boomer Music and get coffee/hot chocolate and play games together. Most recently, you have learned to play Tri-onimos and it is a lot of fun! I hope you have a wonderful, winter-themed, snow birthday today! I can't wait to make this day special with you! Love, Mommy

My Cute Little Monster

Aunt Teresa originally bought this hat for Levi, but I think it looks pretty cute on Zoë too :)

Balance 365 and A Link

If you've noticed some of my posts from the past several months you may have noticed a hash tag such as #healthyhabits #healthylife #B365. What do these mean, you ask? For the past 16ish months, I've begun focusing more on small habits that can benefit my overall health. I have a hard time getting onboard with anything big and scary/overwhelming at this phase of my life.
Some days I can't even do dishes, so there's no way I can give a ton of mental energy to a big "diet" plan or an intense season of exercise. What I can do is give just a little of myself each day to making healthy choices, and once I make that healthy choice for about a month (or am feeling confident that I will continue to do so) I move on to something else. Back in April, I was introduced to the group Healthy Habits, Happy Moms by my cousin Annie. The group began a Walk the Way challenge in May in which they challenged us to get out and walk every day. That didn't seem too scary to me, so I decided to do it and just loved it! It was great to get outside and get fresh air, plus most of the time I was able to go alone because I would wait until Jeremiah was home so I'd be able to have a little quiet time which made it even more enticing because it gave my mind a mental break from "momming". I found a route approximately 1.5 miles and have kept up with it, several days a week, since then. For me, that is the epitome of successful. It's not a huge goal, or an intense form of exercise, but it's something I can do in this season of life. When I come across a day when it can't be done, I don't feel discouraged, because I know it's no big deal to do it again the next day. I figure with my consistency I've been walking an average of 4-5 times a week since then which means I've walked about 228-285 miles over the past 8 months instead of doing something sporadic and less enjoyable.
Then September rolled around and the HHHM ladies kept sending emails about a new program called Balance 365 and to be honest I didn't even read through the first few. I didn't want to be a part of another "program". Then a few things began to catch my eye -- "not a diet", "food freedom", "establishing lifelong habits for your health" and then I started reading the emails. Finally on the day before the program was about to close, I read through the entire email and thought, "Maybe I should do this." I felt like I had come to the end of my own personal ideas of habits I could come up with myself. I did write out a few and tried to even come up with 12 habits of my own, but couldn't come up with 12 new ones. The concept intrigued me, so the next day, the last day to sign-up, I spoke with Jeremiah and having decided that during the Fall, one of my four focuses would be my health, I signed up, with a bit of trepidation. As soon as I sealed the deal, there was the immediate worry of, "Agh! I shouldn't have spent that money. What if this doesn't help? What if this was a waste of time/money?" But I waited until I had access to my new account and then began reading.
I won't bog you down with all the details of what the program is because it belongs to the founders and if you'd like to learn more you can check it out at the link I'll leave you below. But let me tell you a little about what I've discovered over the past 4 months --

My Thanksgiving pie buddy --I barely captured the picture because she was leaning in for more ;)
-- Food Freedom. This is no small thing for me. But even after 2 months I realized my food obsession was coming to an end. Meaning, I wasn't constantly thinking about what I was eating, what I'd be eating at my next meal, guilt over what I had eaten previously. Nope. It was dissipating and in its place was... freedom! I eat. I enjoy what I'm eating. Sometimes I eat too much. But the obsession with the quantities, the timing, what I'm eating, is very nearly gone. And it feel awesome!

--Consistency. This one is more difficult to describe. But I feel regular, normal. I realized how much I love this feeling, just this morning. I woke up and was hungry. I eat with my family. I don't walk into the kitchen and wonder, "Hmm, maybe I should have a snack. I don't know. I guess I'll just eat something." Sure, there are days I am hungry, and do want a snack, so I eat one. But for the most part, my body has regulated to eating at normal intervals and not feeling snack-y in between. Even the fact that I don't sip on coffee all morning long has contributed to the good feeling I have, most of the day, now. I'm learning what it feels like to be hungry before meals and embracing it instead of being afraid.

-- I'm listening to my body. This one may sound silly, but it's completely relevant and definitely worth the mention. Many diet programs, especially geared toward women, tell you what to eat, when, how much and you stop listening to your body and its cues. Do you know how brilliant your body is? It knows when you're hungry, it knows when you're full, but many of us have taught ourselves for years how to override those feelings/cues so that we -- don't eat more than 1500 calories a day; eat only a certain number of points; keep eating that cookie dough because it's 'against the rules' so we eat and eat until we feel sick because tomorrow it will be on the restricted list again. It's totally messed up, but the diet industry wants us to fail and keep coming back to them and paying them money to 'fix us' when what we really need to learn is how to listen to our body and eat when we're hungry and feed it good, quality, healthful foods. Do you know what happens when you realize no foods are off limits? You eat them when it sounds good and you can stop when you're full knowing that you will, in fact, get to eat them again. Doesn't that sound like a good, satisfying life? I think so, and I get more and more excited the more I find myself self-regulating and listening to my body instead of weighing foods or counting points or feeling guilt over "bad" foods.

I'm only 4 months in to this B365 world, but it has been life-changing for me. And that's the best part, these habits I'm learning are going to serve me and support me for the rest of my life. It's been hard work working through the fear of whether or not I can do the next habit or sustain it for the rest of my life. I just do it and when I feel ready to move on, I do. There's no race. There's no failing. There's only me, letting go of the fear and beginning to live a life with more confidence and food freedom!

If any of this strikes you as something you'd like to start or consider for your life, I'm about to give a shameless plug. I share all of this from a vulnerable place of how I'm taking steps to live the life I dream of and hope to help others do the same. But the founders of the B365 program are so awesome that they're letting the members of their group have a chance to earn some money back by sharing this program with our friends and family. So if you want to learn more or if you do, in fact, want to sign up for the program, they are accepting new people starting today! If you would be ever so kind, you can use my link to sign up.  https://www.hhhmprograms.com/a/2541/r3BLLxZu

I truly appreciate it!

Levi's Birthday Party

It's been nearly 3 weeks already, but better late than never :)
We had a fun time for Levi's birthday party. Jeremiah created a scavenger hunt around the house with coordinating Bible verses for the kids to search for the pieces to the marshmallow shooters they made.
Zeke's new hat matched the camo theme of the day
Aunt Teresa and Miriam face-timed for the present opening.
I pulled out a pair of the boys' old camo pants so Zoë could participate too.
Zeke and Levi both enjoyed having a little baby at the party.
I like to take a family photo at each party so we can see how we have all changed over the past year. I just recently purchased awesome new frames from Hobby Lobby to update the previous ones for each of the kids. Then their coordinating party picture goes in the frame for an entire year for them to enjoy in their rooms.

A fun table-full of friends and family enjoyed pizza and fruit salad.

I think Levi was pleased with his cake and his party. What a great smile he has!
That night we started a new tradition -- driving around town to see Christmas lights at the end of his birthday
We had a great time celebrating Levi's 3rd birthday and look forward to the year ahead!
