Workbench Fun

The boys, and Zoë, have enjoyed breaking in their workbench this week. The chalkboard paint was put on yesterday and Zeke has already begun making plans on it. I see many hours of fun ahead with this fun gift from Daddy! Especially as next week is going to get cold again and they need some time to be out of the house and pound on some nails :) Have a great weekend!

Levi is THREE!!!

Levi Olin, you are 3 years old today! Every day with you is an adventure and you surely do make me earn my Momma paycheck ;) I started reading parenting books and spend a lot more time praying than I used to. You are strong, energetic, sweet, thoughtful, consistent, love a daily schedule, and I could go on and on about how proud I am of you and how happy I am to be your Momma. Here's how you've changed over the past 6 months:
- You took your first plane ride and our first family vacation to Daytona Beach, FL at the end of September. You were a bit nervous and out of your element at the airports and on the plane, but overall you were a champ and very brave.
- The first day of vacation you were tentative about the ocean waves, but from day 2 on, you were in the waves and playing and always finding an adult to go with you in to the water. What fun!

- Your vocabulary and communication skills have really grown! You use words like 'volcano' and 'delicious'. But I'm so glad that some of the words you say still remind me that you're only 3 -- like "dood" for good and "hungee" for hungry. I will be sad when you start saying those words correctly. I enjoy hearing you talk; you do stutter at times, but if the person listening is quiet and patient you are able to talk much easier.

- A typical day looks like -- breakfast of "Sausage... eggs... and juice" at least that's what you ask for every, single, morning. After breakfast is learning time and plenty of play time. At lunch you inform me which show you want to watch before naptime, which is always "Octonauts", and then 2 books and a nap. When you get up you play some more and we have supper, during which you make sure our evening looks the same as always, "Take a bath. Watch a movie. Go to bed." as you like to say. You love your routine and if anything is going to be out of the ordinary I do a lot of prep work with you the day before so you can prepared for whatever is different.

- You started potty training in July and took to it like a champ. You earned a gummy bear every time you tried going the first day which was very rewarding, but backfired a bit the next day when you didn't get "rewarded" every time. You did pretty well by the end of the first week, esp. during the day! You only wear pull-ups at nighttime now because you sleep so hard and have a difficult time waking up. Plus you drink lots of water -- which is fantastic!

- You follow along as I do school with Zeke in the mornings. You are learning the days of the week, months, and can count up to 12. You know your ABCs and are getting pretty good at the memory game. You write with your right hand and have started your first tracing book.

You picked your own pumpkin at Osborn Farm
You were a cute pirate for Halloween!
- We carved pumpkins for Halloween. You made a few slices/dots in yours and called it good :)

- Enjoying a dum-dum after trick-or-treating. You had a blast and would have probably gone further if we'd had more time!

Getting ready to enjoy Pop-Pop's birthday cake!
- I love seeing the three of you play together. You like to do whatever Zeke's doing and Zoë copies you.

- You sat down and pulled Zoë into your lap and asked me to take your picture. You love your brother and sister very much!

- You like to help me in the kitchen. We bake and cook and you help set the table for meals. You are a wonderful helper!

Thanksgiving 2016
- You took your first gymnastics class the end of the year and did a great job! You learned how to somersault, jump backwards and sideways on the trampoline, and hang from the bars. You liked running around and jumping off of things onto the mats.

- You enjoy animals and seem to be very good with them.

Picking out our Christmas tree at Osborn Farm

- You have gotten very fast at riding your bike. You balance well and like to pull your feet up as you glide down the hills. You sometimes go faster than I like, but for the most part you stop at the end of the sidewalks and wait for us to catch up. You love to ride that bike and we probably better get a helmet on you soon!

Before we wrap things up, let's do a little birthday interview to make note of some of your favorite things in life as you turn 3...

Favorite food: "lizards, more lizards, and grasshoppers!" ...
I exclaimed, "What do you like to eat?"
        L : "I don't know" with a shrug of the shoulders.
-- Moving on... --
Song: My favorite song is "Jingle Bells"
Color: My favorite color is red like this {pointing to shirt}.
Drink: My favorite drink is applesauce and more juice and more pizza.
Movie: My favorite movie is pigs and donkeys and showers.
Book: My favorite book is Lion King.
Things to do: My favorite thing is applesauce and gum beary sauce {gummy bears}. Play games. I like to do gymnastics.

{These are all direct quotes, people. I love that he used full sentences!!}

Levi, I hope you have a wonderful birthday today! I love you so very much and cannot wait to see what the next year holds for and with you! I hope you have fun as we take you to your first movie theater movie and out to eat lunch on Thursday and you get to spend special time with both Daddy and I. It's so fun to get to know you better when it's just the three of us. I hope you'll always know how important you are and how much we love you!

Revised Oreo Truffles

I learned how to make oreo truffles in college and have enjoyed them many Christmases since. But once Jeremiah began having more trouble with dairy, it wasn't as fun to make them anymore. So I just stopped. Now that Zoë seems to have trouble with dairy as well, I decided it was time to get creative and try an alternate version. I looked up alternatives to cream cheese and one of the first options I found was coconut cream mixed with some lemon juice. I decided to make it even easier on myself; so after crushing up an entire package of oreos in the food processor, I mixed in all the cream from a 13 oz. can of Thai kitchen coconut cream with a spatula. It was VERY wet, so I didn't let the kids help with the rolling part. Next time I will use either half the amount of cream or double up on the oreos. After rolling into balls I froze for a couple of hours then dipped them in vanilla almond bark.
We had them after dinner that night and they were delicious! The coconut flavor was not overwhelming and they obviously held together quite well. We saved a few for Christmas day and enjoyed the rest. I hope you enjoy this dairy-free version!

A Week in December

Zeke helped me make the first of our Christmas candy -- peanut butter "buckeye" pretzel bites! They turned out great and we saved a few for Christmas day.
We got another nice snow! Zoë was happy for approximately 1.75 minutes before she fell over and started crying and wouldn't stop until I took her inside.

Zeke found the pinwheel to play with in the snow. They get pretty creative when they need to. Don't they look so cute in their snow gear?!

My colorful girl-- wearing a yellow dress from my childhood, yellow leggings, and then you can see the rest. She was chasing the boys down the hill as they rode their bikes over by the school. She loves trying to keep up!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Discovering Self-Care

Much to my surprise, when I was reflecting upon which habit I want to focus on for the month of December, I decided it should be self-care. Personally, when I hear the phrase 'self-care' the first words that come to mind are lazy, selfish. Those tapes have played in my head my entire life and it is going to take intentional work to rid myself of those dishonest thoughts. It's hard for me to choose a habit that benefits my emotional well-being because I'm a driven and I-want-to-see-results person. I'd much prefer to keep focusing on my dietary habits so I can lose weight/fat/fit in my clothes better. But, as I've been a part of the Balance 365 community for a couple of months, I'm realizing how important a holistic approach is to my health. Stress can have so many negative effects on my health, so instead of adding something that would require more brainpower, will power, mind-work, I chose something that would be life-giving to me. Which, at first, was hard to accept. And then as I thought about it, I got more and more excited. Something to make me feel better, more whole, more like a human being and less stressed, less likely to get upset with my family? This is genius!

I have already written up my "plan" for December and posted it on my door to see every day. But I thought I might share it with you in case you, like me, need a boost of confidence to take care of yourself or even 'permission' to not feel guilty when you say no to another holiday party, to not do another pinterest project, to just be instead of striving to be more. I think it's ok for all of us to scale things WAY back and even more so during the Christmas season.

So here's my game plan:

1. Slow down.
It might sound too easy. But as I am a highly efficient person (or at least I like to be!) having 3 small children gives me the efficiency of a slug working it's way through mud. Many mornings look like: "wash one dish, go break up a fight, walk back to the kitchen, return to the living room to stop the screaming, go back and wash a fork and spoon, return to living room to find pictures knocked off the wall..." I think you get the idea. And this is not a stretch, it's just actual fact. And then I get so frustrated with my children because, hey, they're being children and it's annoying because it's slowing down my productivity and then we get into a cycle of upset and tears. So, yes, I'm going to slow down and worry less about efficiency and more about taking one step at a time.

2. Do the bare minimum.
Agh! This one ^^ is going to be tough. I hate doing the bare minimum. I would rather do everything really well and if I can't do it well, I don't want to do it at all. But I'm going to give myself the grace to do the bare minimum, which might mean I clean one toilet and that's it. But for the sake of my sanity, for the relationship I want to build with my children during this season, to keep the focus on Jesus and not the neatness of the house or the "presentation" of my family, I'm giving myself the permission to do the bare minimum.

3. Be kind to myself.
I am my biggest critic. And I've found that the more I critique myself and degrade my abilities and my lack of this or that or what I'm not accomplishing, the easier it is for me to do the same towards others. I hold myself to such a standard that neither I nor anyone else can ever measure up. And it is exhausting. So in being kind to myself, I believe it will trickle over into being kind to others as well. If I can accept that I did not clean the bathroom -- again-- I can also accept that my husband did not pick up his shoes -- again. Because isn't a peaceful household another great goal for the season? I think so!

4. Pick 1 self-care activity every day.
I've been doing pretty well at practicing some self-care each week, but this month I'm going to kick it up a notch and pick something every single day. I've held the belief that I have to get out of the house or spend money or do something big to 'accomplish' self-care. But it's not true. So I picked a few things that I can do both at home as well as out of the house. I think one of the things I'll truly have to work on is not feeling guilty for my self-care habit, especially when I choose to stay home. Often, when I'm home, if I choose a self-care activity, it's hard for me to not be thinking in the back of my mind, "I should be doing something else, like the dishes, or folding laundry, or tidying up, I don't deserve to sit here and relax." Working on relaxing without guilt is going to be a big step forward for me. Here are some of my personal suggestions:
- Read for 30 minutes
- Play the piano
- Meet a friend for coffee, without kids
- Watch a movie
- Dance/stretch/do some yoga
- Go for a hike
- Zumba
- Workout at the Chilson center
- Take a nap
- Go to the Coffee Tree
- Eat a doughnut. That's right. I love me a good doughnut, and to be able to enjoy it without guilt? Definitely an act of self-care ;)

And lastly, my new mantra, is to remind myself of this: "I'm doing the best I can." Because not only am I allowing myself to believe the best about myself, it pushes me to believe it of others. Maybe that other person isn't actually frowning at me, but thinking about their mom being in the hospital. Maybe that driver didn't cut me off in traffic because they're rude, maybe they are rushing to pick up a child from school. Maybe we're all just doing the best we can.

I hope that those of you who read today's post are encouraged to reflect on how you might take care of yourself this December. Let's spur each other on in treating ourselves, and one another, with more care and grace and acceptance, not just in December, but all year long!

Small habits. Small changes. Small encouragements.

Damage Control, A Poem

Inspired by true events this morning...

Banana peel from her mouth,
plucked from the compost bin.
A crumpled check wrenched from her fist
a six-toothed little grin.
She screams with anger, screams with joy
her face gets oh-so-red.
I feel so guilty from my relief
when she's tucked in her bed.

A Christmas tin crushed in half
-- thought it a great place to stand.
A banging on the glass -- I run --
a door lock in his hand.
Spanking, yelling, crying, tears
how will I make it through?
I know they say the years fly by,
but right now, it's only noon.

I'm not ungrateful, quite the opposite,
I'm thankful for each child.
But some days feel like DEFCON 3
they're loud, rambunctious, wild!
So many things I want to accomplish
but I guess now's not the time.
In a few years, perhaps, you'll see me again
in the meantime, more coffee, I'll be fine.

15 Months Old!

My sweet Zoë girl. You are 15 months old today! You have changed very much since I posted 3 months ago. Here's what you have been up to since August:
Halloween Day outfit
Your first trip to the ocean -- Daytona Beach, FL
Pumpkin Patch at Osborn Farm
Riding in the wagon with Daddy
- You say a few words -- "ma-ma", "da-da", "cracker", "please" {which you also sign}, "dog", and "cat". These are the ones I remember. You are trying to imitate even more.
All 3 kids at the pumpkin patch
Dressing warm for one of Zeke's soccer practices. New boots and jacket and socks!
Little pirate feeling sleepy at the Halloween Hullabaloo
- You are walking like a pro. Sometimes you put your hands in the air and walk around like a little monkey. I just love it. You are pretty steady on your feet and love your independence at getting around the house and the yard.
Family vacation
- You have 6 teeth! Four on top, two on bottom, and it looks like two more are making their way in on top as well. You look adorable with your teeth, especially when you show them off with your smile.

- You are starting to nap just once a day. There are some days when you still need two, but those days are becoming less and you're taking more of a 2-3 hour nap in the middle of the day.

- You have begun to wear some 18 month clothes. You still wear plenty of 12 month clothes as well, but they are getting a bit short, so I went ahead and bumped you up since we're having a few cooler days, as well as chilly mornings and evenings. You need all the pant length you can get.
Looking at the geese
- You are going to be a tough little girl. Levi knocked you clean off your feet the other day when he ran right into you. Both brothers wrestle with you. And you like to get right in the middle of things. You are also starting to stand up for yourself by screaming back at them if they take your toy, crawling while angry-screaming at them, or climbing on top of someone who has upset you. You are fierce!

You two play together so well!
- You eat pretty much everything! Dairy does seem to bother you, so your extent is yogurt which seems to settle ok. I make your pizza with no cheese. You finally stopped drinking formula a couple of weeks ago and the only milk I can get you to drink is chocolate cashew milk, so I have begun to mix it 70/30 with some plain cashew milk and you drink it pretty well before bed. You like to feed yourself and scream at me when I try to help you {sometimes, not always. It's very confusing for me ;)}. You like to use a fork and spoon and seem to prefer your left hand.
After trick-or-treating, you pulled the wrapper right off this dum-dum and thoroughly enjoyed your sugary treat!

- You have a great laugh! You like to be tickled.

Zoë Kayte, I just love having you as a daughter. You really are full of life and bring smiles to our faces daily. You seem to love animals, your family, playing outside, and being an investigator. I can see now why so many parents child-proof their homes -- you get into everything! And you're quiet, so I don't always hear you sneak in. One time I came up the stairs from putting Levi down for a nap, and began finding pieces of toilet paper by the door and followed the tp path all the way to the bathroom as the pieces got longer and longer. You are a character! We tell you this often. It's true. And it's wonderful! I can't wait to see what develops in the next 3 months! Love, Mommy

Family Vacation Pictures

We had such a fun time in Daytona Beach, FL for our first family vacation. I took a lot more pictures than what I shared on Facebook, but didn't want to overdo it on my wall, so I'm sharing a bunch here for those of you who actually want to see them :)

Friday:
Breakfast on the Beach
She was leaning back and forth, playing peekaboo, her current favorite game.
Watching the storm from Aunt Teresa's balcony.
Saturday:
The view from our balcony
He loves this shirt! It says 'Make some Waves', we thought it fitting for the beach.
Sunday
Happy Birthday Uncle Paul!
Zeke helped spread the chocolate on Uncle Paul's birthday cheesecake.
We had such a wonderful time in Florida! We're sure to go back again some time, but were thankful to be out of there beforeHurricane Matthew arrived.
