The Countdown Continues

I went into the hospital late Monday afternoon as I was not feeling well again. As they were checking my vitals, they registered several high blood pressure readings, which was concerning. So in went an IV (blegh!) and more blood work (I have had more blood work in the past 8 months than my entire life combined!) to check for other symptoms of preeclampsia. I was admitted into my own room, and after a couple hours, we started up the magnesium sulfate again, as that is one of the medicines to help bring blood pressure down. Fortunately, for me, the mag sulfate does not seem to bother me as much as others. Many people feel nauseous, dizzy, double vision; some have said it feels like you've been hit by a truck. I just get really hot! So I was able to have the freedom to get up and use the bathroom on my own instead of needing a catheter this second time around. They came and drew my blood every 6 hours... once again --blegh! And kept me for around 24 hours. The doctor was great and continued to check on me regularly. At around 5 pm the next day she said no other symptoms were showing up, so my diagnosis is Gestational Hypertension. They took me off the mag sulfate and the boys came to pick me up around 7 pm.
All about the balance -- salad and a milkshake :) Another lovely hospital meal. (7/21/15)
With this second diagnosis, in addition to my already high-risk pregnancy, it looks like I'll be going in for check-ups 2x a week for the duration of the pregnancy. To monitor my blood pressure, but also keep an eye on all the other previous factors. My bed rest will continue, maybe even to a higher degree as now I need to make sure I'm not over-exerting myself and bringing my blood pressure up. Which is a bit more challenging with 2 literally, bouncing-on-my-bed, boys! But baby girl is always active and happy when they're around and making noise and talking to her. Once again, she was in no danger during my last 24 hour stint at the hospital, which I am thankful for! Her vitals all looked fabulous, so although my body seems to be giving out (at least it feels that way this time around!) she has not given ANY warning signs that she is in danger. We are all thankful for this. I went in yesterday for a bp check and it was 110/60 which was good; meaning I don't have to have any more blood work done until Tuesday.

As of today, I am 33 weeks + 1 day and our goal is the 37 week mark. My countdown is helping greatly because it feels like a long time ago that all the shenanigans began -- 4 weeks -- and that's about the amount of time I'm left with. In some ways, it doesn't seem awful because I've been through that much time already, we just have to do it again. In other ways, it feels like a LONG way off because I know how these past 4 weeks have seemed to last and last. The good news is: we have some visitors coming over the next month (hooray!), we have our baby shower tomorrow, our anniversary is on Tuesday -- and we get to go on a date! I already got the doctor's approval, twice :) -- and then with 2 check-ups every week, I think we'll stay fairly busy and the days will pass a bit faster. Please continue to pray for Baby Girl and I through this final stretch. I am more anxious than ever to meet her, but also happy to do what I can to keep her cooking a few more weeks so she can continue to develop and grow as much as possible. Thank you for caring and praying for us through this pregnancy! We truly appreciate it!

A Lovely Surprise!

Remember the quote I shared recently? The one I wanted to somehow get put up in the house? Well look at this surprise that showed up on my doorstep today...
Thank you to my sister for such a wonderful surprise gift! Love you!

Fresh Air Laundry

We started washing clothes for Baby Girl this week. These happen to be some that I wore as a baby. I was almost afraid to wash them since they're delicate and old. But hanging them out to dry seemed fitting.
I looked through my baby book on Wednesday and recognized a few of the outfits in my pictures. Having a girl just might be fun!

Pregnancy Twists and Turns

This third pregnancy has been a lot of things -- a surprise, exhausting, speeding by, a girl, high risk - due to placenta previa, and sometimes, really tough. These last few weeks have come with some obstacles I couldn't imagine having to deal with, until I had to. That Thursday night, as I was rocking Levi to sleep, I was thinking about the fact I had never spent a night without him yet (just as it had been with Zeke before Levi was born) and was pondering how he would deal with it when the time came for Baby Girl to be born. Then as the ambulance was driving me by the New Castle exit around 2 AM that Friday morning I became a bumbling mess as I lay in the stretcher. Knowing the boys would wake up, wondering, "Where is Mommy?"; not knowing when I would get to go home again and hold them; knowing I was leaving them, for other people to care for, when I have been a part of every single day of their lives, for their entire lives. It was heart-wrenching for me and there was nothing I could do except pray for them to understand and be ok.

The next few days were met with varied outlooks from doctors and nurses. As each one came to check in and evaluate me, I would grow desperate, then hopeful, then unsure as they delivered a different "answer" as to what the future held for me and baby girl. I was thankful for the visitors and packages that arrived for me as I lay in my hospital room. Also, for the Facebook messages and posts; friends and family letting me know they were praying for us; phone calls, emails, and text messages. It truly meant so much! A couple of times I thought I might just burst out of the room and run away because I felt trapped and I wasn't home to take care of my boys and the thought of being in a hospital for 6-7 weeks made me want to scream!

As it became more clear that baby girl and I seemed to be stable, more positive outlooks were given, although Jeremiah and I didn't want to get too excited just in case they decided to change their minds. Pregnancy, all of it, is really a lesson which could be titled, "How in Control You Really Aren't" (sorry, that was a terribly formed sentence, but hopefully gets the point across!) Can you even fathom the hundreds of thousands of details that go into forming such a tiny, intricate human being? Body systems, organs, bones, blood, muscles, all must form and develop in an exact way, in perfect order and timing. Add to that the myriad of changes the mother's body goes through to accommodate growing a HUMAN; organs moving out of the way, stretching ligaments and skin, an increase in blood supply, revved up metabolism and those aren't even the annoying things :) And what can I do but eat more, take naps, and pray that everything will come together perfectly and this baby will grow and develop and be healthy.

When it was decided that I would get to go home on Friday, I was met by another onslaught of emotions. First, fear. What if something happens to baby girl once I leave the general safety of the hospital? As well as, jumping up and down (figuratively) with joy to be going home to be with my family again. And lastly, how was I going to manage bed rest for the remainder of this pregnancy? How would we make the boys understand I can't really do anything for them? Would we have enough help that our family would make it intact to the end? At last, Friday arrived and I was overjoyed when I saw my patient and loving husband come through the door to take me to my freedom :)
Quite happy when this man arrived to take my things to the car and take me home!
So happy to hug his little body again!
During the past (almost) 3 weeks I have been required to be silent and still. A difficult feat for me. But it has forced me to reflect. To rest. To ask for help. I have been praying, writing in my journal, and reading my Bible more than usual. At times like this, when I can't understand why life is going differently than I had planned, I cling to and look for truth in God's word. When my human mind gets caught up in the "Why is this happening?" a couple of verses I'm choosing to focus on are:

"The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps." Proverbs 16:9

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." Psalm 56:3

There was a great quote I read during my hospital stay that I'm committing to memory. I struggle with every single line. But the truth is freeing and I'm hoping I can find a way to print it out and place it in our home.

"No amount of regret changes the past. No amount of anxiety changes the future. Any amount of grateful joy changes the present." - Ann Voskamp

The concept of daily thankfulness is one we've been trying to make a habit for our entire family over the past several months. Each day, usually at dinner time, we take turns sharing something we are thankful for that day. We wanted to start this for the boys at a young age, and it is a great practice for Jeremiah and I as well, as I feel adults can be more cynical and miss the small things that you can be grateful for each day, when you don't try to look for them. We typically start with Zeke and he'll give one of a few answers, but occasionally he'll surprise us with a new answer and it gives me great joy to watch him truly reflect on what he is saying and come up with a response. Levi goes next, always waiting patiently for his turn. We ask and he smiles and points to his plate. It is precious to me and I'm glad that he seems to be grasping the concept in his own way. We have many things to be grateful for even in these past weeks that have gone differently than what we expected. Some include:

- during the entire ordeal, Baby Girl's heart rate, oxygen, and activity levels remained normal indicating she wasn't under any stress!

- I passed my 3 hour glucose test!

- I haven't had any more bleeding, although I will remain on bed rest for the duration of the pregnancy to do our best to prevent it from happening again.

- my doctor appointments have gone well the past two weeks I have been home. Everything is looking normal and Baby Girl's growth is right on track!

- barring any unforeseen circumstances, we will be meeting our daughter in late August!

- our friends and family have stepped in to help out around the house, with the boys, and given Jeremiah a break from having to complete all of his regular duties plus most of mine!

Another article I read during my hospital stay seemed written just for me. From Proverbs 31 Ministries:

Change has a way of swirling in and around our lives. Just when we adjust, like a squirming toddler, life refuses to stay still. We finally think we’ve gotten control, when chaos erupts again. One activity stops while two are added. And whether we like the new that’s come, or wish we could run and hide, our feelings don’t change the inevitable.
Facing another change, and handling it well, requires a woman of character. Change requires traits I feel like I haven’t fully mastered and so I tend to think, I’m just not patient. I can’t be kind.
But maybe, just maybe, times of transition are God’s way of bringing the change. He just might be setting up this opportunity for me to grow into the woman He knows I can become.
I’m learning I can allow the pressure of transition to transform me. I can permit the rain and the sunshine in my life to grow His fruit in me … the kind described in today’s key verse from Galatians 5: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Every day we are becoming something different. The question is, Who are we becoming? During the planting, watering and weeding of change, if we will be diligent and faithful during each season, we’ll see beauty grow in our lives.
As we lean into God, asking for strength through the peace or through the pain, He will make us into the women He’s intended for us to become: Women becoming God’s definition of beautiful.
Lynn Cowell
I feel like this post has been discombobulated, but perhaps that's a truer reflection of life, it doesn't always flow as smooth as you hope for; the pieces don't always fall into place the way you expect, but as a friend reminded me, none of this has taken God by surprise. His plan for my life, for baby girl, and our family is perfect. What we can do is join hands, love one another and take each day, one step at a time, choosing to be grateful in the process. I hope you enjoyed this small snippet into our lives and that you might take time to pray for Baby Girl, my family, and I over the next 5+ weeks as we wait patiently and hopefully grow stronger and more united as a soon-to-be family of FIVE!

18 Months Old!

Levi, you are 18 months old! You are growing up fast! Learning, developing, changing, growing in many ways. Here are some of the new things you have begun in the last 3 months...
I asked him if I could take his picture this morning... he had to have the camera facing him so he could see himself.
And Zeke really wanted in on the action too!
Sweet boy, 18 months old, 6/17/15
He kept running at me as I tried to take a full-length shot.
- You have gotten in your 4 bicuspids, the pointy teeth! That means only your 2 year molars are left to complete your "baby" set.

- You can say lots of words now... if only you would :) What I mean is, oftentimes, I'll ask you to say something and you'll just nod and say, "Uh huh!" even though I know you can say it. In May I wrote down as many words I could remember you saying; I'm going to refer to that list now -- ball, balloon, Mama or Mah-meeee, Dada, dog, arf! (for a dog noise), lellow (yellow), blue, more, please, no!, push, up, "meh-meh" which means Amen (also, when asked at meal time, 'Do you want to pray, Levi?' you nod, bow your head, close your eyes, and wait for us to pray -- love it!), thank you (and in the appropriate context!), bee-bee (baby), hot!, ow (for meow/cat), juice, whoa, uh-oh, light, bye-bye (with double-fisted, backward/sideways wave), this, hi, bubble (apple), bubble (bubble), eye, ear, my (mine), yay (with clapping, after we finish a song or when you hear others clapping, you did this at the rodeo last week too!), dry (after you wash your hands). I think there are actually more, but I can't really remember everything!

Kisses for Momma on Mother's Day
- You took your first shower after the pool during our trip to Steamboat Springs. You loved it! I could hardly get you to leave.
A fun bath with cousin Miriam
- You are a fireball of emotions. One minute you might be belly-laughing, having a blast, the next, you're screaming at us, angry because we did something against your will. This is cause for some great highs, as well as lows for us.

Picture time with Momma
Being silly!
- You enjoy riding on Zeke's trike now. You like to be pushed around, but can also use your feet to make yourself move, just not with the pedals yet. You like the time we spend outside on these warm, sunny days, playing with the water table and whatever we can find in the garage that might be fun.

- You are starting to enjoy reading books. You'll bring them to me from time to time. I'm glad for this because I was afraid you'd never want to stop moving (which is still mostly true), but you are starting to take time to sit, read, and enjoy the books. You really like looking at Zeke's Ranger Rick magazine, and you're absolute favorite is your Highlights Hello magazine! You read at least one of the editions every day.

- You fall asleep with Scout at most every nap and bedtime. You are starting to sing along with the songs, sometimes even when your eyes are closed. In particular, there's one song that goes something like, "I want a dog, please, it's my favorite animal. I want him to be yellow, please, it's my favorite color. I want him to eat raspberries, please, it's my favorite food. And I'll call him Levi, just like you." You join in at just the right time to say "please" each time. Your timing is great and it just makes me smile because if you weren't singing along, I'd definitely think you were asleep.

- Against my will, I got out the 2T summer clothes today (June 15). It was hard because I just put them away from Zeke who was wearing them last summer. Most of the 18 month clothes fit ok, but are starting to just get a bit tight, so I thought it was more important for you to be comfortable and cool then try to squeeze you into clothes that were too small. You look pretty adorable in them, I have to admit :)
Your first Easter egg hunt
Brrr! Trying to enjoy an orange julius popsicle.
Time for a walk!
You look so uncomfortable! Yet you were excited to wear the big boy headphones.
You're going to be such a great big brother!
"What's with all the pictures Momma?"
Strength Training -- you are strong! I think you can do 10 pull-ups now.
Trying to get to the toothpaste?!
First "horse ride" in Steamboat Springs, CO
PJ Picture!
Matching Outfits!
Picking some flowers before our walk, during which, you fell into a cactus on the way back :/ Mommy had to carry you most of the way back to the car!
Working on your selfie!
- You enjoy playing outside with Zeke at the water table you got for Christmas. Yesterday (6/15) some neighbor boys came over to play too and you got really wet! You didn't seem to mind. I'm hoping that means your swim lessons will go well later this summer.
Post water table picture!
Levi Olin, Mommy and Daddy love you very much! We are thankful for the past 18 months with you in our lives. You make each day exciting and colorful! You challenge us to be more creative and patient than ever before. We love to hear you laugh, watch you dance, and play with your brother. We pray for you every day and look forward to the journey of life ahead!
