Reflections: On Grief, a Poem

 Sitting in grief

I feel it in my body, my bones —

borrowed, given, taken, shared.

Focus and clarity, depart

What remains drowns me:

violent visions, steeped in sadness

a literal aching heart.

How much can I endure?

I want to relieve myself of this burden,

see the light again.

But the cloak clings

casting its shadow

until every image is blurred

every sound is muffled

every taste is bland

every touch is shied away from

yet desired.

A gentle touch on my shoulder

a hug, a hand in mine.

This burden is not mine alone

to bear

but in those moments between

dreaming and wakefulness,

despair.

I fear the only way out

is to remain here;

allow the sadness and tears to linger

feel the pain and grief

be silent

be still

await the arrival of joy…

another day.
