One Month Old!

Zoë Kayte, you are one month old today! It has gone incredibly fast. The past month has felt busy in some ways, and slow in others. Here's what you've been up to:
August 2 -- just a few hours old! This was Mommy's first time to see you.
So many tubes for such a tiny baby. Thankfully they came off pretty quick!
One of our favorite nurses, Arla, giving you a bath!
Not yet a fan of the bath
I just love your look in this picture!
We spent lots of time snuggling in this chair in the NICU
A few days with a feeding tube gave you a leg up on growing.
First day in Mommy's room! New hat and blanket!
Sitting up on Mommy's bed on your last morning in the hospital
In the van... going home!
Your going home outfit was so big on you!
- You were discharged from Valley View Hospital on Saturday, August 15. You were in the NICU for 12 days, in Mommy's hospital room for 1 day, and then discharged. After birth, you were on oxygen for just over 24 hours before being able to come off the C-Pap and stay off. You were able to stay in a private room for over a week because the nurses didn't think you liked all the noises and lights in the NICU. You only had to be under the bilirubin light for about 24 hours. You drank donor milk and some of my milk during your hospital stay.
Our precious family of five
A little like Levi, one sock missing already!
- You eat about every 3 hours (Mommy wakes you up if you don't wake up on your own). You are breastfeeding and bottle feeding right now. Most of it is Mommy's milk, but we occasionally throw in some formula which Mommy is learning is OK.
Bath time at home... getting a little better.
And then again, not ;)
We love this sleeper -- it says "Little Sister" and has a pink ruffle on the back!
Good sleeper girl
Hanging out with the boys!
- Zeke got used to calling you "Rosie" throughout the pregnancy. While he still slips up sometimes, he typically always calls you by your full name, Zoë Kayte! Levi loves to check up on you, making sure you're doing ok, and giving you the little blue singing bear. He lovingly refers to you as "Oë". He loves to give you kisses on your head and he's even tried to hold you a few times.
More sleeping pictures because they're just too cute!
- You are a decent sleeper. Really, this first month has been uneventful because you eat, sleep, and fill your diaper. I'm not complaining! It has been great to "ease" into having three children. These past two weeks you've begun to have a little more alert time, but mostly you're sleeping, which is good since you need to keep growing and get your rest. Your favorite place to sleep is while Mommy is holding you in the solly wrap. This will come in handy once all our helpers leave and Mommy is spending more time taking care of the three of you on her own. You also do fairly well in your swing and the newborn sleeper in your pack-n-play. You are doing better about sleeping through noise (aka your brothers).
Hanging out with Daddy!
- You've had quite a few visitors in your first month of life -- Aunt Teresa, Uncle Paul, Miriam, Grandma, Great-Grandma Stenerson, Great-Grandpa Stenerson, and Mimi.
We are monitoring this relationship closely...
Already spending lots of time in the solly wrap. One of your favorite places to be!
Tummy Time -- August 31
Little peanut on a big quilt!
Zoë we are so thankful for your life! You are strong and brave and have been through much already in your first month outside of the womb. You have such beautiful blue eyes and dark hair. Your fingers and toes are long and you seem to be quite tall. You wear NB clothes -- some of them are starting to fit a little more snug (yay!) and plenty are still loose. We take you in for another weight check-up tomorrow so we'll see how your progress has been over the past 9 days. You cry some, but not too much, just enough to let us know you need something. Mommy has lots of fun picking out your clothes each day. Pink and purple and ruffles are more fun than I expected :) You have lots of cute clothes and people keep giving you more. I think you're set for a least the next 9 months! You are wearing disposable, newborn diapers for now, but I intend to start on the cloth diapers before long. We can't wait to see what this next month holds as Fall begins and we start preschool with your big brother, Zeke. You are so loved, little baby girl! Happy 1 month!

Love, Mommy and Daddy

Bed Rest to 5K

Once upon a time, in my life before children, I use to write posts from time to time with the label "Healthy Living." I spent a good portion of my time devoted to running/exercising on a regular basis. I encouraged other people to join in with me. I even taught a Zumba class for a semester! I was at the lowest weight of my married life and feeling pretty good about myself. I had just bought quite a slew of smaller-sized summer clothes at an Old Navy sale before I discovered I was pregnant with Zeke.
Zoo Run 10K, Fort Worth, TX; April 2010
Marathon Relay into Colorado Springs, CO; September 2010
Turning 25, at work; May 2011
The thing is, I was 24 years old, and sure, I was working my butt off, but I was missing at least half of the whole "healthy life" point -- my diet. I justified I could eat whatever I wanted, as long as my calories going in were still less than the calories I was expending. Now that I've grown older and wiser (maybe ;)) I've come to realize a couple of things.
#1. While exercise is an excellent thing to do for your body and health, it alone does not make you healthy. You must follow up with excellent foods -- fruits, vegetables, protein, nuts; perhaps whole foods as much as possible. Eating in moderation, definitely. For 29 years I would not categorize my eating habits as "self-controlled" or "disciplined." It's hard, but making a change will be worth it. Which leads me to my second point.
#2. I need to find a reason to do this that exceeds the "I want to be a certain weight" goal. After having children, my body is different. I've read articles about loving your body all the time, not just when you reach a certain weight; appreciating it for what it can do. So... what is my "Why?" Why do I want to make healthy decisions and really change my life for the better?
 - To avoid diabetes, heart disease, cancer, hypertension; diseases than are often onset due to being overweight or obese.
 - To live a longer, healthier life!
 - To be a good example to my family; showing my children first-hand how a healthy lifestyle can be fun and is worth it!
 - To be more confident with how I look and feel about myself.
 - To see if by making healthier food choices I can eliminate my eczema and acne.

I do not have illusions that 6 months from now I'll be a different person, I'll be making consistently healthy choices and my body will look totally different. Change takes time. It takes focus. It take self-control and determination. Like erosion, it is a sculpting, shaping, gradual process.

... I began this post on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2, having no clue I'd be giving birth just hours later. So I'm finally back, here on August 14, to continue.

What I'd like to do is begin writing again on a more regular basis about the topic of "Healthy Living." It is important to me and I feel that writing out my thoughts and sharing my activities might help me to press on when I want to give up. But also, maybe I will encourage others to make small changes for the better in their lives as well. As I've just had child #3, I don't intend to push myself too hard in these first few months. We'll have to adjust to life as a family of 5 and I feel that it's best to not put too many expectations on myself in the first few months. Otherwise I might end up disappointed in myself or getting frustrated more easily. My 2 goals for September - December are:

#1. Drink 100 - 128 oz. of water daily. (128 oz. is a gallon and that is my goal for health as well as promoting a good milk supply.)

#2. Once I'm cleared to do so, exercise for 20 min. per day, 3 times a week. I'm planning to get some workout videos from the library. As I was on bed rest for almost 5 1/2 weeks and am now recovering from a c-section, it's going to take me some time to get my strength back. I'll need to start slow with walking and beginner videos, but I'd rather take it slow and not injure myself and actually enjoy myself, than jump in too hard and give up.

The reason for the title of this post is that several weeks ago, Jeremiah had mentioned that if I do another 5K and followed the popular "Couch to 5K" plan it would be quite a literal interpretation in my case! And it sparked in me the idea to share my journey of getting back into shape while making better food choices and see what benefits I can provide to my health and well-being. I would like to do a 5K, but as I said, I am starting slow and will probably not take on that endeavor until either next spring or summer. But I hope you will enjoy following along with me as I work on these two goals over the next few months.

To life... full of healthy (and sometimes difficult) choices!

August has arrived!

July has always been one of my favorite months. It is included in my top 3: May, July, October. I'm not entirely sure why. I suppose I have many good memories associated with this month; there was never school in July, it's my Mom's birthday + the 4th of July so it was always a special holiday to celebrate and we spent time with family. And in more recent years I've added our anniversary and now 3 nieces' birthdays! How can you not love a sunny, warm month with much to celebrate?! But alas, this year, I am quite happy to turn the calendar into August and complete my countdown of July.

Why? Because this is the month we will meet our daughter! Bed rest will end. The stress over how my body might "hiccup" next will be over. I'll be able to pick up my boys again -- not immediately of course, but soon. And I'll get to start using some of these cute girlie clothes that I've been receiving!! We'll officially become a family of 5 and life will take a turn for the chaotic once more. Prayers are appreciated for a continued, boring (if possible), 2.8 weeks as we wait for the big day. 4 doctor appointments remain and we have help coming and going through the coming days to continue helping with the boys and around the house and keeping morale up in general. We are going to make it -- 20 more days!

To life... full of waiting and wanting and wishing!
